Four cities can work well in fourteen calendar days when Chengdu is a genuine priority and the three intercity transitions are treated as itinerary time. Choose three cities instead when deeper stays, substantial free time or fewer hotel changes matter more than adding a fourth stop.

Keep Chengdu when its food culture, panda-conservation context and slower regional contrast are genuine priorities. The starting allocation of four nights in Beijing and three nights in each remaining city gives every stop a distinct role while acknowledging three transfer days.
Choose three cities
Remove the fourth stop when the journey has fewer than about 13 nights, substantial recovery time is important, or the group would rather deepen museum, neighbourhood and free-time experiences in Beijing, Xi’an or Shanghai.

Four city stages
Days 1–4
Beijing
Use the arrival day for recovery and a light orientation only when energy permits. A major reserved visit should not be placed on this day until the international schedule and usable arrival time are known.
Over the following days, build a measured introduction to imperial Beijing through the Palace Museum, housed in the former Ming and Qing imperial palace, a suitable Great Wall direction, the Temple of Heaven and one selected museum, historic-neighbourhood or interest-led context. The final combination follows current access, weather, walking ability and the traveller brief rather than a guaranteed checklist.

Days 5–7
Xi’an
Use the first Xi’an day for the intercity transition and orientation. The dated proposal selects the transport and remaining programme after the current timetable, usable door-to-door time and traveller energy are known.
The core planning theme is to place the Terracotta Warriors within the wider mausoleum and archaeological landscape, then connect that context with Xi’an’s historic city, a suitable museum or historic site, and food culture. No admission, display, cycling, night access or site order is guaranteed by this page.

Days 8–10
Chengdu
Use the first Chengdu day for the intercity transition and a light introduction. The journey should preserve the slower regional contrast that gives Chengdu a clear role in the four-city route.
A later day may connect the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding’s conservation, research and public-education context with a food-led exploration shaped by Chengdu’s UNESCO City of Gastronomy status. The remaining time can deepen the city or consider one condition-dependent excursion only after current feasibility is checked. This public route does not name or guarantee an excursion, admission, host, restaurant or private format.

Days 11–14
Shanghai
Use the first Shanghai day for the intercity transition, orientation and rest. A first neighbourhood or skyline perspective is optional and depends on the actual arrival time.
The following days can connect the historic Bund and Huangpu river-trade and architectural story with a suitable Shanghai Museum venue and the contemporary urban contrast of Pudong. The final combination follows current venue access and operating conditions. The departure day remains aligned with the confirmed international schedule and must not be described as a full touring day before that schedule is known.

- travellers with limited mobility who prefer shorter walking blocks and more recovery time;
- museum, architecture or archaeology interests that benefit from deeper city stays; and

Arrival and departure
Fourteen calendar days do not automatically equal fourteen full touring days. The international schedule determines the usable first and last days.
Reservations and current conditions
Major venues and intercity transport may use date-specific opening, reservation, identification and capacity arrangements. The applicable rules are checked for the actual travel date rather than frozen on this illustrative page.
Walking and recovery
Imperial sites, archaeological areas, museums, historic streets and urban districts can involve substantial standing or walking. Mobility needs, rest, weather and the preferred daily rhythm should be understood before the final route is confirmed.
Season and weather
Weather and daylight affect outdoor sections, walking comfort and pacing. The actual forecast and current local notices—not a permanent “best time” promise—guide the final plan.

Is 14 days enough for Beijing, Xi’an, Chengdu and Shanghai?
It can be, when the journey has about 13 nights, gives each city a clear role and treats the three intercity transitions as real itinerary time. Travellers who want substantial free time may gain more from three cities or additional days.
Why include Chengdu in a first China itinerary?
Chengdu adds Sichuan food culture, panda-conservation context and a more relaxed regional contrast. It earns the fourth stop when these are genuine priorities, not when it is included only to increase the number of destinations.
Should families or travellers with limited mobility remove a city?
