China Nature Tour Guide: Mountains, Rivers and Landscapes

China Nature Tour Planning Guide: Mountains, Rivers and Landscapes

A strong China nature itinerary combines two or three contrasting landscapes and allows enough time for weather, walking and regional transfers. Zhangjiajie, Guilin and Yangshuo, Yunnan and the Qinling Mountains each offer a different experience; trying to include all of them in a short trip weakens the journey.

Best regions for a China nature journey

Zhangjiajie

Sandstone pillars, forested valleys and elevated viewpoints suit active travelers and landscape photographers. Allow three to four days and retain weather flexibility. See our Zhangjiajie guide.

Guilin and Yangshuo

Karst peaks, rivers and countryside work well for gentle cycling, walking and slower landscape travel. Three to four days is practical. See our Guilin and Yangshuo guide.

Yunnan

Mountains, lakes, highland landscapes and cultural diversity need a regional route of seven to ten days. Elevation and season should shape the itinerary. See our Yunnan guide.

Qinling Mountains

The Qinling region can add protected landscapes, family learning and responsible outdoor practice. In our Qinling family programme, parents and children receive a bag before entering the protected area and carry out their own waste and litter safely collected along the route.

How many days do you need?

  • 7–9 days: one major landscape region plus a gateway city.
  • 10–14 days: two contrasting nature regions with practical transfers.
  • 15–21 days: suitable for three regions, deeper walking or photography.

Route design principles

  • Avoid changing bases every night.
  • Use weather-flexible days where visibility matters.
  • Match walking, altitude and heat to the traveler’s ability.
  • Confirm cable cars, park shuttles and seasonal access.
  • Balance active days with recovery and cultural context.
  • Choose rail or flights based on door-to-door time.

A practical 12-day nature route

  1. Days 1–3: gateway city and cultural context.
  2. Days 4–7: Zhangjiajie with flexible forest-park and mountain routing.
  3. Days 8–11: Guilin and Yangshuo for river and countryside landscapes.
  4. Day 12: onward international connection or additional city stay.

Responsible outdoor travel

Follow protected-area rules, remain on appropriate paths, carry out waste, avoid disturbing wildlife and respect local community privacy. Weather, safety and guide instructions take priority over completing a planned route. Read our Responsible & Sustainable Travel approach.

Frequently asked questions

Can Zhangjiajie and Guilin be combined?

Yes, but allow enough time for the connection and at least three days in each region.

Is a nature tour suitable for families?

Yes when walking, heights, weather, meals and rest are adapted to the children’s ages.

When is the best season?

It depends on the regions. Spring and autumn often suit multi-region routes, but rain, heat, altitude and visibility vary widely.
